We longed to be “home”. We have enjoyed visiting these other churches, but have left each time longing for the familiar sights, sounds, faces and fellowship that make ECF the unique body it is. We miss you all terribly.

Not much has changed physically since last month. I continue to remain steady. The additional tests have shown that the Celiac’s is not as severe as it could be and the doctors are happy with the level of gluten avoidance I’ve been maintaining. And still, while there has not been any major upswing, I have begun walking again for some very moderate exercise, and we continue to chase down any other avenue that promises to give us additional insight or help.

Our stay in Texas was very restful, and we will be heading out of state next week, for a few weeks at another quiet retreat. And while I have not been up to writing much of anything at all, I have been blessed with some increased stamina for reading. This of course affords both nourishment and refreshment to my soul as well as diversion for my mind. And it has proved a fertile seedbed for prayer.

As always, my reading choices are pretty eclectic. To date I’ve read the following list, I will however put an emphasis on 3 books, with one heading the list of “must reads”.

1. Still – Lauren Winter
2. Lincoln’s Last Hours – Charles Leal M.D.
3. Pilgrim’s Progress pts. 1 & 2 – John Bunyan (re-read)
4. The Voynich Manuscript – Gerry Kennedy
5. Un-Orthodox – Deborah Feldman
6. The Last Things: An Eschatology for Laymen – George Eldon Ladd (re-read straight through instead of for reference)
7. The Shooting Salvationist: J. Frank Norris and the Murder Trial that Captivated America – David R. Stokes
8. Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base – Anne M. Jacobsen
9. Beowulf – Unknown
10. Abraham Kuyper’s 6 “Stone” Lectures on Calvinism
11. Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account – Miklos Nyiszli
12. Galileo’s Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, faith and love -Dava Sobel
13.Notes From The Tilt-A-Whirl: Wide-Eyed Wonder in God’s Spoken World – N. D. Wilson

I must remark that The Pilgrim’s Progress by Bunyan has been unusually sweet to me this time around. I cannot recommend it highly enough to you all. The old English may be a tad cumbersome – but the incredible imagery and scriptural fidelity in painting the Christian worldview in terms of our trek toward the Celesital City is worth reading and re-reading countless times. This is especially true of part 2 consisting of Christian’s wife – Christiana and her children’s journey. What a token of God’s love and care for us! If you are dry or weary spiritually, or somehow have begun to think that struggle in the Christian life must be a signal of something wrong – go back and get a vision adjustment in this timeless, blesse classic.

Secondly, while I mentioned this book during our study of Daniel – The Last Things by Ladd is the best little primer on Biblical prophecy available in my estimation. It is quite short and succinct and not technical. An easy read and an eye-opener. I find it very encouraging because it blows so much smoke out of the way. If you want a good, solid, encouraging sense of being able to wrap your heart and mind around Biblical prophecy – this little gem can do it.

But lastly, I must almost insist on N. D. Wislon’s “Notes From The Tilt-A-Whirl:” Astounding. A brilliant and poetic polemic against atheism, vain philosophy, existential despair and romanticized Christianity. A little piece of delightful art. It is fun and thought provoking and truly brilliant. I think you would thoroughly enjoy it. It is fast, easy and great reading while treating high subjects without any technical jargon at all. Fabulous. Some of it is written with the holy sarcasm of Elijah on Mt. Carmel, exposing the folly of the atheistic worldview with A. W. Tozer’s insight and C. S. Lewis’ wit. Every young person facing college ought to read it. DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED by anybody.

Frankly, I wouldn’t bother with Still. That was a waste of time and money. It is very popular right now and not worth the paper.

Lincoln’s last hours by the surgeon who attended him from Ford’s Theater till his death is gripping. Only about 14 pages long. You can get it free from Google Books.

The Voynich manuscript is fascinating if you like odd myserties of real life.

Un-orthodox is an amazing look inside the world of ultra-orthodox Judaism in New York City. The anti-Zionism of these Jews is intriguing. It is a very “adult” book in treating some subjects with the candor (I think) needed to be the expose it is.

The Shooting Salvationist is a rich look at Fort Worth history dealing with one of its most colorful characters – the Pastor of First Baptist Church – America’s first mega-Church in the 1920′s. Imagine your pastor tired for arson, perjury and murder! Ha!

Area 51 is a real fun read and debunks much of the UFO garbage, while unfolding the even more interesting history behind America’s most secret military base.

Beowulf is the ancient English classic that inspired Tolkein to write the Hobbit – etc. Tough slogging but brilliant.

Kuyper’s Stone Lectures are a big feast on Biblical Christianity addressing culture – but tough reading if you don’t like that kind of analysis.

Auschwitz was harrowing. This is written by Joseph Mengele’s (the Nazi “Angel of Death”) Jewish conscript. It is hard to see the doctrine of total depravity more graphically

Galileo’s Daughter was interesting but too long by 1/2. His trial however is summed up better than in this book – in Wilson’s book in a few short sentences.

In the work are Gerald Bray’s “God is Love” (so far, fantastic), Richard Muller’s 4 volume “Post-Reformation Reformed Dogmatics: The Rise and Development of Reformed Orthodoxy. Carl F. H. Henry’s “God, Revelation & Authority” – kind of Francis Schaeffer on steroids. The Illiad of Homer and some other smatterings. Oh yeah, a work on Henry the VIII and Pride and Prejudice.

Anyway – keep seeking Christ friends. Take up the mindset of Christian and Christiana. Know that God is more gracious and loving that you could ever imagine. Pour your heart out to Him about EVERYTHING. And trust Him. He will not fail of any promise. Every one of His own, WILL make it home.

We love you: Reid & Sky.

Colossians 1: God’s Attributes as Revealed in Christ (Part 7), Col 1:17(a): He is Before All Things; Phil 2:1-16, 2 Cor 8:1-9, Jn 13:3-5 & 12

Sermons
<guid
